Celebrating Afifa's Journey: From English Student to U.S. Citizen!

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

We are thrilled to congratulate Afifa, our exceptional Pantry Manager, on achieving a significant milestone in her life: becoming a U.S. citizen! Afifa's incredible journey at The Branch began nearly five years ago when she arrived in the United States with her husband and daughter as an English student. Over the years, she demonstrated remarkable dedication, perseverance, and a passion for making a difference.

Becoming a U.S. citizen is an extraordinary achievement that requires a thorough process. Here are some simple facts about the journey to U.S. citizenship:

  • Eligibility: To qualify for U.S. citizenship, individuals generally need to be at least 18 years old and have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a specific period, usually five years. There are exceptions for those married to U.S. citizens or serving in the military.

  • Naturalization Process: The process of becoming a U.S. citizen is known as naturalization. It involves submitting an application, attending an interview, passing an English and civics test, and taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

  • English Proficiency: As part of the naturalization process, applicants are required to demonstrate their ability to read, write, speak, and understand basic English. Exceptions may apply for certain age groups or individuals with qualifying disabilities.

  • Civics Test: The civics test examines an applicant's knowledge of U.S. history, government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. It typically includes questions about the Constitution, the branches of government, and important historical events.

Afifa's journey from an English student to a U.S. citizen is a testament to her unwavering determination and dedication. Her achievements inspire us all to pursue our dreams regardless of the challenges we may face. As an integral part of our organization, Afifa continues to make a positive impact on the lives of others through her work as the Pantry Manager. We are immensely proud of her accomplishments and the role model she has become for our community.
