English Classes

Learning English is critical to daily life in America. Our English classes include language learning and cultural literacy. The Branch offers a variety of virtual (Zoom) and in-person classes, both morning and evening, traditional and intensive.

Traditional Classes

$50 per year; includes books

Levels 0-4 (Pre-literacy – High Intermediate)

  1. Classes meet twice a week for 1 ½ hours from August through May.
  2. Students are expected to complete 1 hour of homework per week.
  3. Students complete 1 level per year.
  4. CASAS pre and post testing required.
  5. Day and evening classes

Advanced English

$150 per semester; includes books

  1. For students levels 5 and above
  2. Offers standards-based integrated skills to help prepare adult students for success at work or in an academic setting.
  3. Focuses on developing reading and writing skills, along with listening and speaking in order to build student self-confidence in using written and spoken English.
  4. Meets 2 times a week for 1.5 hours
  5. Options for virtual, in-person, or hybrid, morning and evening.

Advanced Functional English – ONLINE

$100 for 6-week class

  1. For students level 5 and up.
  2. Focuses primarily on practical, functional spoken English in order to advance fluency.
  3. Includes grammar, reading, pronunciation, and aspects relating to student’s own English goals in order to develop more precise English for various situations.
  4. Meets 2 times a week online for 1.5 hours.
  5. Books are not required.

Intensive Classes

$300 per semester; includes books

  1. Intensive classes are available for level 2 in person and level 4 online.
  2. Classes meet 4 times a week for 1 ½ hours.
  3. Level 2 students meet in person on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Level 4 meets virtually Monday-Thursday.
  4. Students are expected to complete 2 hours of homework per week.
  5. CASAS pre- and post-testing required.

Classes at Southeast Nashville Public Library

No cost; only available to Davidson County residents

  1. Classes for Beginning to level 2.
  2. Classes meet 2 times a week for 1 ½ hours.
  3. Beginning to Level 1 classes meet Monday and Wednesday mornings, 10:30 am-12:00 pm.
  4. High Beginning to Level 2 classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:15 pm – 7:45 pm.

How It Works

Schedule a 25-minute introductory placement test followed by a more in-depth CASAS test. To schedule your test, email us.

2.

Complete the registration forms.

If you have taken the test and were told to register, click here.

3.

Pay your book or class fee.

4.

Attend the orientation and start your class.

*The Branch does not provide childcare during in-person English Classes. Only adults registered for classes may attend, and regular attendance is required.
